Vacation or Holiday?

The words holiday or vacation have related meanings in different English Speaking countries and continents, but will usually refer to one of the following activities or events:
A general leave of absence from a regular occupation for Rest or Recreation
A specific trip or journey for the purposes of Recreation/tourism
Official or unnofficial observances of religious/national/cultural/other significance, often accompanied by celebrations or festivities (public/religious holiday)
A holiday or vacation trip/break will often be undertaken during specific holiday observances, or be made for specific festivals or celebrations. Certain religious holidays may be of a more sombre nature. Vacation or holidays are often used as a time to spend with friends or family.
Longer breaks from a career or occupation also exist, such as a sabbatical,gap year or career break.

Holiday?
Holiday is a contraction of holy and day, holidays originally represented special religious days. This word has evolved in general usage to mean any special day of rest (as opposed to regular days of rest such as the weekend).

Vacation?
In the United Kingdom the word "vacation" referred specifically to the long summer break taken by the law courts (and later universities)—a custom introduced by William the Conqueror from Normandy where it was intended to facilitate the grape harvest. The French term is similar to the American English: "Les Vacances." The term derives from the fact that, in the past, upper-class families would literally move to a summer home for part of the year, leaving their usual family home vacant.

Types of holiday (observance)

Consecutive holidays ?

Consecutive holidays are a string of holidays taken together without working days in between. They tend to be considered a good chance to take short trips. The common vernacular has seen the inclusion of the term "holiday junction" as an expression of when two holidays recombine. In late 1990s, the Japanese government passed a law that increased the likelihood of consecutive holidays by moving holidays from fixed days to a relative position in a month, such as the second Monday. Well-known consecutive holidays include.

Religious holidays?

Several holidays are linked to faiths and religions. Christian holidays are defined as part of the liturgical year. The Catholic patronal feast day or 'name day' are celebrated in each place's patron saint's day, according to the Calender of saints. In Islam, the largest holidays are Eid and Ramadan,Hindus,Jains and Sikhs observe several holidays, one of the largest being Diwali (Festival of Light). Japanese Holidays contain references to several different faiths and beliefs. Celtic, Norse, and Neopagan holidays follow the order of the Wheel of the Year. Some are closely linked to Swedish Festivities. There are also many well known Jewish Holidays. The Baha'i Faith observes holidays as defined by the Baha'i calender.

National holidays?

Several sovereign nations and territories observe holidays based on events of significance to their history.

Secular holidays?

Several secular holidays are observed, both internationally, and across multi-country regions, often in conjunction with organisations such as the United Nations. Many other days are marked to celebrate events or people, but are not strictly holidays as time off work is rarely given.

Unofficial holidays?

These are holidays that are not traditionally marked on calendars. These holidays are celebrated by various groups and individuals. Some are designed to promote a cause, others recognize historical events not recognized officially, and others are "funny" holidays, generally intended as humorous distractions and excuses to share laughs among friends.

Northern Hemisphere winter holidays?

The winter months in the Northen Hemisphere see the observance of many holidays considered a season, often accompanied by festivals and feasts. The winter holiday season is known as a period of time surrounding Christmas that was formed in order to embrace all cultural and religious celebration rather than only Christian celebrations. Usually, this period begins near the start of November and ends with New Year's Day on January 1. The holiday season is usually commercially referred to with a broad interpretation, avoiding the reference of specific holidays like Hanukkah or Christmas. Traditional "holiday season" festivities are usually associated with winter, including snowflakes and wintry songs. In some Christian countries, the end of the festive season is considered to be after the feast of Epiphany , although this is only within the Christian creed. Winter holiday greetings are traditionally a part of the winter holiday season.

Speaking vs. Writing

Differences Between Spoken & Written English

1. Speech is universal. Everyone acquires a native language. Not everyone knows how to read & write.

2. Spoken language has dialect variations. Written language generally demands standard forms of grammar & vocabulary.

3. Speakers use their voices (pitch, stress, rhythm) and bodies (gestures & facial expressions) to help convey their ideas. Writers have to rely on the words on the pages to express their meaning.

4. Speakers use pauses & intonations. Writers use punctuation.

5. Speakers pronounce. Writers spell.

6. Speaking is usually spontaneous & unplanned. Most writing takes time. It is planned. We can go back & change what we have written.

7. A speaker speaks to a listener who is right there. For the writer, the reader's response is either delayed or non-existent. The writer has only that one opportunity to convey information that is interesting enough & accurate enough to hold the reader's attention.

8. Speech is usually informal & repetitive. Writing on the other hand, is more formal & compact. It progresses logically with few explanations.

9. Speakers use simple sentences connected by a lot of conjunctions (and, or, but). Writers use more complex sentences with connecting verbs (like, however, who, in addition).

Say & Tell, Other & Another

These two verbs are alternatives for speaking. You say words, You tell a story.

Say is used in the sense of speak often used in indirect speech: She said that she would come or questions about someone's words: What did you say?

Tell is used more in the sense of inform and usually as an object: He told me he would come or She told the children a story.

Although both of these words are used in both direct and indirect speech, say is more usual than tell in direct speech. This is because say can refer to any sort of speech, while tell always means "instruct" or "inform".
"Put the money in the slot", he said.
"Put the money in the slot", he told me.
"You have to leave now", she said.
"You have to leave now", she told me.
We said, "Happy birthday!" (NOT We told him, "Happy birthday").
"Where do you live?" he said. (NOT "Where do you live?" he told me).
The verb tell is usually followed by an object, that is, we usually say who is told.
I told her that she was wrong.
They told us that we could keep the objects.
Say is more commonly used without an object, but when it does have one, we use the word "to".
I said that she was wrong. (NOT I said her that …).
I said to her that she was wrong.
When tell has the meaning of "instruct", it can be followed by an object and an infinitive.
She told me to leave.
They told us to keep the objects.
We cannot use say in this way.
Tell is used (with or without a personal object) in some common expressions:
Tell a story (He told (us) a frightening story).
Tell a joke (I'll tell (you) a joke I heard today).
Tell a lie (She told (me) a lie).
Tell the truth (Next time, she will tell (me) the truth).
Tell the difference (Can you tell (me) the difference between a frog and a toad?).
Tell the time (I can't tell (you) the time because it's too dark).

Other and Another

another = one more [ex. I'll have another beer.]

other can mean in addition to something already mentioned. [ex. Are there any other people we should speak to?]The bartender says, What would you like to drink?And you say, I'll have another beer.

Each Other, One another & Themselves

"each other" and "one another" are alternate ways of saying the same thing. 'each other' is more common when only two people are involved; 'one another' is more common when more people are involved.

However, either can be used in either case without any loss of meaning. These must be used only in the plural. The action goes from one person to another, different person; and the reverse. They love each other. They love one another. They write to each other. They write to one another. Impossible: She writes to each other. He loves one another. 'themselves' is different. This can be used in the singular (changing to 'himself' or 'herself', of course) or in the plural. The action goes from any one person to the same person, not to a different person. They thought very highly of themselves. (Each person thought highly of himself. No information about whether any of them thought highly of some person other than himself.) She cut herself with a butcher knife. (She did the cutting. She received the cut.) Contrast with They cut each other with a butcher knife. (Each cut someone else. A cut B, and B cut A)

I was born in Canada almost 50 years ago. I have been a professional teacher since 1987, but my passion is photography & film. For more information go to Facebook & search: Nicholas John Gunn.
I came to Chile in July 2005, to be with my wife, Claudia Tudela, who I met on the internet (http://www.latinamericancupid.com/). We have a wonderful and very happy relationship, which has produced the latest member of our family: Nicholas Ignacio Gunn Tudela. Nico Chico was born on August 23rd, 2006. He has both Canadian & Chilean citizenship, and he is our joy & delight.
We are all currently living in a 3-bedroom apartment near Metro Universidad Católica.
